Body Memory & Interoceptive Landscape Tool

A trauma-informed somatic mapping exercise

Eating disorders often disrupt the ability to safely interpret body-based emotional and physiological signals. This somatic mapping exercise supports clients in exploring how trauma and emotional experiences may be stored in the body while building interoceptive awareness.

This resource is most effective when:

• A therapeutic alliance is established

• The client demonstrates basic emotional regulation capacity
• The clinician has provided foundational psychoeducation on trauma and nervous system responses
• The goal is increased awareness — not trauma processing

At Ai Pono Hawaii Eating Disorder Treatment Center, we integrate somatic awareness, trauma-informed care, attachment theory, narrative therapy, and interdisciplinary medical support into our treatment model. We approach eating disorder symptoms as adaptive responses within complex relational and physiological systems. Sustainable recovery involves rebuilding trust with the body, restoring interoceptive awareness, and developing safer regulation strategies that do not rely on symptom expression.
