Philosophy

At the ‘Ai Pono Body Balance Program, we recognize that compulsive
over-eating and related obesity are complex problems with
psychological, emotional, nutritional, and physiological
aspects, all of which need to be addressed in a
comprehensive, supportive environment.

Those seeking recovery from problems with
disordered eating are often shamed and blamed by
a culture that insists it is simply a matter of will
power, of eating the right foods in the right
amounts, or of exercising properly. These over-
simplifications fail to respect the psychological
roots of the problem, do not address the need for
significant lifestyle and behavioral changes, and
help to perpetuate the problems of yo-yo dieting,
exercise resistance, and emotional eating.

We see compulsive and/or excessive eating as a way
of coping with social and psychological stress and
believe that by developing better skills for dealing with
their bodies, their feelings, and their relationships, those
who struggle with these types of disordered eating can reclaim
their lives and health.
