Frequently Asked Questions
How is the ‘Ai Pono Body Balance Program different from other programs?
‘Ai Pono is the only comprehensive intensive outpatient program (IOP) in Hawaii that addresses the psychological, behavioral, and physical aspects of eating disorders and it is specially designed for those struggling with compulsive over eating and binge eating disorders. Our group treatment sessions are scheduled in the late afternoon/early evening to help minimize the disruption of daily activities such as school, work, and family responsibilities. Our staff is a dedicated group of experienced eating disorder professionals.
What is binge eating disorder?
Recent research at Harvard University suggests that frequent binge eating is the country’s most common eating disorder, far outpacing the better-known diet problems of anorexia and bulimia, and yet, the least likely to be diagnosed. It is strongly associated with obesity and risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. It is defined as bouts of uncontrolled eating, well past the point of being full, at least twice a week.
Does ‘Ai Pono encourage weight loss surgery?
The ‘Ai Pono Body Balance Program neither encourages nor discourages weight loss surgery, a procedure which we believe is a personal decision made between a patient and her or his doctor. We provide a supportive environment for those seeking relief from food and weight issues, regardless of how they choose to do so. However, we believe that for those who choose to have bariatric surgery, it is imperative that they understand not only the physiological risks, but the psychological risks as well. We discuss those risks in the program. We view bariatric surgery as a tool for dealing with weight loss, but not one that addresses the causes of binge and compulsive eating behaviors. If those underlying issues are not addressed, the weight lost from surgery may be regained and post-surgical medical complications can arise.
What if I am currently in individual treatment?
At ‘Ai Pono, we honor the relationships that you may have previously formed with your physician, psychologist, or counselor, and we welcome their professional input into treatment and discharge planning. Clients who suffer with related problems such as depression and anxiety often continue to obtain treatment with individual providers while they are in the ‘Ai Pono program.
What is the cost of the ‘Ai Pono Program and is it covered by insurance?
The cost of the ‘Ai Pono Program is $275 per treatment day. This is a comprehensive fee that covers all services including individual nutrition therapy sessions. Your health insurance will likely cover a significant portion of these costs. We are a participating provider with HMSA and Kaiser, whose policies typically cover 80% - 100% of the costs of treatment. Other insurance carriers should provide similar coverage. Self-payment plans are available by request. We also accept MasterCard and Visa payments.
When and where is the program?
The Body Balance Program is located in the Century Square Building at 1188 Bishop Street, Suite 2412, in downtown Honolulu.
Phase I meets from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Phase II meets from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday.
What if I need to miss a day of treatment?
Clients are requested to provide a 24-hour notice of cancellation, such as in the event of work or school conflict. We will not charge for properly canceled appointments or appointments missed due to medical emergencies. However, no insurance claims can be filed for appointments not appropriately canceled and payment for missed appointments (“no show”) is fully the responsibility of the client.
